- A Central Govt. Notification vide Extraordinary Gazette dated 26th march, 2001 published by Authority by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment makes it mandatory for every district in the country to have an SPCA and has laid out specific Rules to be followed by and grants to be given to the SPCA. At a time when there was no integrated animal welfare and animal rights activities in the district of Thane, the Thane SPCA , a Registered Public Trust ( No F-10998 dated 10 / 10 / 2002 ) was floated on the 7th of June, 2002, by 7 individual animal activists from all over Thane, as per the orders of the District Collector. This organization was to carry out exclusively all the field activities of animal welfare and animal rights under the regulatory guidance of the District PCA (Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Committee, presided by the District Collector. Thane SPCA has been formed as per the abovementioned Central Govt. Notification. Thane SPCA is recognized by the of the Animal Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Environment and Forests holding Recognition No. Maha-106 / 2003.
